BestBackupHarddrive

Seagate remains one of the biggest names in storage and even with the rise of cloud storage, there’s still call for a reliable portable hard drive. The newly refreshed Seagate Backup Plus Slim is available in four capacities of 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB, the drive currently costs just $60, $61, $89 and $199, respectively.

On the downside, the Backup Plus Slim drives lack security and has only a two-year warranty, which is shorter than many others on the market, including other drives from Seagate. If you can live with that, the new Slim makes an excellent choice.

Design and portability

It has a nice and stylish metal cover on the top with a brushed finish and a slightly raised logo in the botton right corner. There’s also a thin slit housing an LED but there are no physical buttons for backup so you’ll need to use the provided software.

An obvious advantage is that the Backup Plus Slim is a very portable drive which can easily travel around with you in a bag or even your pocket. It’s just 12.1mm thick and 140g. It comes in a wide range of colours: blue, red, black and silver.

Features

Like most portable drives, the all the new Backup Plus/Slim portable drive is bus-powered. This means it needs only one Micro-USB 3.0 port and comes with a standard USB cable included.

Out of the box, the drive is formatted in the NTFS file system and works right away with a Windows computer or with a Mac.

Also pre-loaded onto the drive is the Seagate Dashboard software and it’s here that you can back-up the files on your computer. You can use the predefined ‘Protect Now’ button or setup your own plan to select which folders are backed up and when.

The Social feature provides a way to share your media on social-networking sites, including Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube, and, conversely, back up media from those sites to the portable drive.

Other than the backup software, the new Backup Plus/Slim drive also include a two-year 200GB subscription to Microsoft OneDrive online storage

Performance and benchmarks

Compared with the Backup Plus Fast, the new Backup Plus/Slim is just about half as fast, which is to be expected since the Slim is just a single-volume drive.

Compared with other similarly configured portable drives, however, the new Backup Plus/Slim is very impressive. Via USB 3.0, it registered the sustained copy speeds of 119MBps and 125MBps of writing and reading.

Conclusion

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is a well-rounded portable hard drive which offers good value for money, design and speed. PC and Mac compatibility out-of-the-box is a decent feature and the Seagate Dashboard software is easy to use offering PC, mobile and social backup.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim is one of the most convenient ways to backup your data, at home or on the go. Only concern with the drive is the fact that it comes with a short 2-year warranty. Other than that, the new Seagate Backup Plus Slim is quite an excellent buy.
